Dear University School Families,
Throughout February, we continue to talk with students about what it means to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive school for everyone. We want every child to feel valued and comfortable being themselves. When we stand together against unkind behaviour, we strengthen our community and reinforce the importance of empathy, kindness, and belonging.
Pink Shirt Day will be recognized on Wednesday, February 25, and students are encouraged to wear pink as a simple but visible reminder that kindness matters and that each of us plays a role in making our school a welcoming place for all.
Ramadan
Ramadan begins this week, from the evening of February 17 through March 19. We recognize that this is an important time for many of our families. Students who are fasting are welcome to spend their regular indoor lunch time in the Learning Commons, where a quiet and comfortable space will be available.
Planning for the 2026–27 School Year
As we begin preparing for next year, it is helpful for us to know if your family will be moving or if your child will not be returning to University School for the 2026–27 school year. If this applies to your family, please notify the school office at your earliest convenience. This information supports our planning and organization for the upcoming year.
School Council
Our next School Council meeting will be held on March 4. During this meeting, we will share updates related to school planning and invite families to provide input and perspectives. Your voice and partnership are valued, and we hope you are able to join us.
Thank you for all you do to support our students and one another. It truly makes a difference in our school each day. Here’s to another great week of learning together.
Warmly,
Jennifer McTighe and Lori Bonanno
Lunar New Year
February 17 marks Lunar New Year, a significant cultural celebration observed by many communities across Canada and around the world. Within the Calgary Board of Education, our schools reflect a rich diversity of languages, traditions, and lived experiences. This occasion offers an opportunity to continue fostering welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning environments for all.
Often referred to as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year, Tết by Vietnamese communities, or Seollal by Korean communities, this celebration holds deep cultural and historical meaning for many Southeast Asian communities and Canadians. It is one of the most widely recognized and joyfully observed events globally. Welcome the Year of the Horse through meaningful student, family, and community connections and conversations.
