Meet the Teacher and Welcome Back Evening
Save the date for the upcoming Meet the Teacher and Welcome Back evening which is taking place on Thursday, September 21 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, weather permitting. More details to follow in the coming week.
Welcome Package - Update
Due to the issues with the internet this week we were unable to provide the paper forms to the students to take home. They will be sent home on Monday or Tuesday of this week and we ask that they be returned by Friday, September 15 including those that may not be applicable as it allows us to ensure that you have read and filled out all of the documents. Please see the information below for more information
Each year, schools have a variety of forms that parents / legal guardians are required to complete or review and update, some of which are paper and others online. In CBE, the forms in an online format (SchoolEngage) are:
- Demographic Verification - 2023-24 – This form includes your child’s personal information as well as parent / legal guardian contact information.
- Citizenship Information Update - 2023-24 – This form becomes available if you change your child’s citizenship information on the Demographic Verification form.
- Annual Authorization - 2023-24 – This form provides consent for school and district use of personal information.
SchoolEngage is one of the applications found in your MyCBE account. This is the same account you use to pay fees, view academic information, book school conferences, register for busing, etc.
If you do not have a MyCBE account, on the MyCBE page click on Create a MyCBE Account. For online help refer to MyCBE - Creating an Account (includes instructions and a video).
All paper forms that need to be filled out and returned are printed on coloured paper and those with only information are printed on white paper. These forms will be sent home early next week.
We are also encouraging all families to register to receive commercial electronic messages so that you receive all messages from your child’s teacher, University School, and the Calgary Board of Education. To register please visit this site: http://calgary.schoolmessenger.com/cbe_subscribe.
Lost and Found Quickly Growing
Each year we accumulate an astronomical number of items in the University School lost and found. Items include things like water bottles, sweaters, jackets, shoes, toques, mittens, lunch kits, and even socks. To help us get your items back to your child we ask that you label all items.
One awesome way to do this is through the school's exclusive fundraiser for Oliver's Labels. Not only will this help get your items back but the school will receive 20% return on all orders. This is an ongoing fundraiser; so you can order at any time of the year and feel free to share the link with friends and family!
Welcome Back Assembly
No better way to celebrate the return to school, have some fun, and meet some of the staff than a Welcome Back Assembly. On Friday, September 8 University School students filed into the gym and cheered on the teachers as they competed in some small “Minute to Win It” style games. The students cheered hard for their teachers and support staff which helped those of us that are a bit more competitive to step up our games.
This year's theme, “How am I / How are we connected to learning, community, and the environment?” was also shared as this well
University School intends to have monthly assemblies throughout the year as a way of bringing the school together to celebrate all of the amazing things that are happening in the building. The assemblies are intended to showcase student learning rather than being large scale productions and help us acknowledge the hard work students are putting into their learning each and every day.
Terry Fox Run
University School is proud to be participating in the annual Terry Fox Walk/Run on Friday, October 6, 2023. We will be participating in the “Marathon of Hope” as a whole school community. Some classes may run to the Duck Pond, while others may only make it part of the way. Over 9000 schools across Canada will hold a run this year. This is the 43rd anniversary of Terry Fox’s run in Canada and over 36 years at University School.
Terry Fox was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer treatment activist. In 1980, he became famous for the Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research, which Fox ran with one prosthetic leg. He is considered one of Canada's greatest heroes and is celebrated internationally every September as people participate in the Terry Fox Run, the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research. Learning communities at University School will be learning about Terry Fox and his story through video clips, books and discussion.
All donations must be made online directly to the Terry Fox Foundation. Last year University School raised almost $6000.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation. To donate please visit https://schools.terryfox.ca/University.
We are looking forward to coming together as a school to honour the work of this great Canadian. Together we can keep Terry Fox’s dream to find a cure for cancer alive!
