Orange Shirt Day – Truth and Reconciliaction

As part of University School’s commitment to reconciliation through education, students and staff participated in Orange Shirt Day & Every Child Matters on Thursday, September 28.

Throughout the week classes engaged in age-appropriate activities to enhance student understanding. On Thursday, the entire school walked down to the pond and went around it in a clockwise direction in reflection. We then returned to engage in conversations outside as classes in circle. Please ask your children about what this meant to them and what they talked about in circle.

Please click here to learn more about University School’s specific actions towards Truth and Reconciliation. All CBE schools will be closed on September 29 in recognition of National Truth and Reconciliation Day which is Saturday, September 30. We hope that you have an opportunity to spend time reflecting with your family on this day and that your children are able to share some of the learning they engaged in this week at school. By taking on this important work and working together we can further the commitment to reconciliation through education.

CBE families and friends are invited to attend a public commemorative event hosted by the City of Calgary in friendship with CBE and the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD). The third annual ceremonial event is on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary. For more information about the event and more information on Orange Shirt Day, read the Orange Shirt Day FAQ prepared by the City of Calgary, CCSD and CBE.

This year's gathering will include in-person speakers and performers, a live stream broadcast, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The event will include an intertribal dance demonstration from CBE and CCSD students. More information on the event is available on the City’s website. Public commemoration of residential schools' tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts is vital to reconciliation.

Terry Fox Run

University School’s Terry Fox Walk/Run is just one week away. On Friday, October 6, 2023, all students and staff will be participating by running between the school and the duck pond after coming together in the gym for a kickoff.

Like last year, all donations must be done online directly to the Terry Fox Foundation. Thank you to everyone who has donated thus far as we have already raised close to $3000 which is an excellent start but only halfway to the goal of $6000. Below are some poems written by students in Grade 1 & 2.

School Council and Parent Association Meeting
