Dear Families,  

What a great first week we’ve had at University School! Thank you to all of our families for your patience and support as students settled into new classrooms, routines, and relationships. It has been wonderful to have our school full again and to see the excitement, energy, and smiles of our students.  

On Friday, we gathered for our first assembly and introduced our focus for the year: Our School is Full of Glimmers.

Glimmers are those small moments in our day that bring us joy, make us smile, or simply make things feel a little brighter. Sometimes they are easy to notice, and sometimes we have to look a little harder for them, especially on ordinary days or days that don't go quite as we had hoped.

This year, we want to help students notice the glimmers that are already around them. It might be a friend saving them a spot, someone making them laugh, finally figuring out something that was hard, a favourite part of the school day, or someone simply being kind.  

We also talked about how each of us can be a glimmer for someone else. Small things matter. Saying hello, including someone, helping out, giving a compliment, or noticing when someone could use a friend can change another person's day.  

Of course, not every day will be a great day. There will be hard days, frustrating moments, mistakes, and disappointments. Finding glimmers isn't about pretending those things don't happen. It's about learning to notice that even on those days, there can still be something good to find.  

We are excited to see what glimmers our students notice, create, and share this year. Here’s to a great year of learning, growing, and finding glimmers together.

Open House

September 10 5:30 – 6:30 pm

  • On Thursday, September 10, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, there will be an opportunity to meet other University School families while enjoying some music and treats outside before heading inside to see child(ren)s classrooms and look around the school. All students and their families are
    welcome to attend.
  • Please note, this is not a conference and there is no time allotted to speak one on one with your child’s teacher about your child and their learning. If this is required, please email your child’s teacher to set up a meeting at another time. Beginning at 5:30 pm there will be music playing in the compound/playground area and we will be providing treats that are for students and any adults that would like one. Thank you to the School Council
    and Parent Association that has generously donated these items.
  • At 6:00 pm, we will announce that families can begin heading inside. Teachers will be available if you have questions and you will get a chance to see the classrooms as well as tour the school and visit the Gymnasium, Music room, and Learning Commons during this time. All teachers sent out a slideshow in their weekly update with some information about their class for you to look at that will likely answer many questions that you may have. We look forward to seeing everyone out on Thursday, September 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. 

Snack and Lunches

As a continuation of the last few years, University School would like to provide snacks to students that may have forgotten or for families that need a little bit of help. If your family is able to help, we would be grateful for donations of healthier food items such as fresh fruit (apples, bananas, oranges), packs of crackers, granola bars, apple sauce packets, fruit bars, etc. All items need to be single-serve and pre-packed. Items can be brought to the main doors of the school, or your child can bring them down to the office. Thank you so much for your help! Also, University School is part of the Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) program which provides prepared healthy lunches to Calgary Schools for students who are in need. Through this program, we will be able to provide daily lunches to some of our students. If you feel as though your family would benefit from this program, please contact Ms. Bonanno (ljbonanno@cbe.ab.ca).

Annual Volunteer Registration Required for All School Volunteers

To ensure the safety and security of CBE students and staff, all volunteers must be registered with the school each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

The Annual Volunteer Registration Form is valid for the current school year only. All volunteers, including returning volunteers, must complete a new registration form each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

Process

Parents and guardians can register as volunteers through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. As part of the registration process, all volunteers must review the POPA requirements and sign to indicate their agreement with the conditions outlined in the form.

New This Year:

Community members who do not have a child registered with CBE must complete their volunteer registration in person at the school where they wish to volunteer. This change allows school staff to verify that volunteers have reviewed and acknowledged their privacy obligations under Alberta's
Protection of Privacy Act (POPA).

Next Steps

Ensure all volunteers complete the Annual Volunteer Registration Form before participating in volunteer activities during the school year.

Parents and guardians can access the form through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. Community members without a child in the system should be directed to the school where they wish to volunteer to complete their registration in person.
