Dear University Families,

Welcome back, and Happy New Year! We hope the past two weeks have provided your family with time to rest and spend time with loved ones. As students return to school today, we are looking forward to welcoming them back and supporting a smooth transition into routines and learning.

Over the next few days, teachers will spend time reconnecting with students, reviewing classroom expectations, and helping everyone settle back into school routines. As we move into the winter months, we’re excited to see learning pick up again and to support students as they continue to grow and make progress.

Attendance

We would also like to take a moment to highlight the importance of regular, on-time attendance.  This is important, especially for our elementary students. The Calgary Board of Education recognizes the strong connection between attendance and student success. Consistent attendance helps students build routines, strengthen academic skills, and fully engage in learning. Chronic absenteeism (missing 10% or more of instructional time) and frequent lateness can negatively impact learning over time.

Did you know?

  • By Grade 3, students with regular attendance are more likely to read at grade level.
  • By Grade 6, regular attendance is a strong predictor of high school completion.

Thank you for supporting your child in starting each school day on time and ready to learn. It makes a difference.

A few gentle reminders as we settle back in:

Please ensure students are dressed for winter weather, including warm outerwear, hats, mitts, and appropriate footwear for outdoor recess.

If your child will be absent, please remember to notify the school.

We know the return to routines after a break can take a little time, and we appreciate all you do at home to help make mornings smoother. We’re looking forward to a great start to the year together!

Warm regards,
Jennifer Mctighe and Lori Bonanno
