So Much to Be Grateful for

Students and staff at University School have so much to be grateful for. We are a dynamic school, in a beautiful location close to lots of amenities, with strong staff, incredible students, wonderful families, and an amazing community supporting us.

Sometimes it is easy to overlook so many of the positives and dwell on the negatives. As a result, we are expanding Mental Health Week to include all of May. Students are engaging in classroom based mindfulness and wellness activities to help us see the good in ourselves, each other, our school, and our community.

We have also begun a school wide gratefulness challenge where students have an opportunity to reflect on and share their thoughts with others on a moveable hallway display that is being placed in different locations around the school each day.

Thank you for helping us make University School an incredible place to learn and work.

Math Flex Friday

University School held its third Mathematics Flex Day this past Friday. Students intermixed between  classes, grades, and rooms to meet some new people, learn from different teachers, and engage in a variety of math games and activities. Please speak to your child(ren) about what games they played as many of these can be played at home or even in the car on some of those long trips.

Looking for LEGO

University School is looking for LEGO to add to our Learning Commons and Maker Space! This will allow students another tool to create and build with as a way of demonstrating their learning.

If you have any spare LEGO or LEGO that you no longer want University School would be happy to have it. All donations can be brought down to the office. Thank you for your help!

Save the Date - Photo Gala - Thursday, May 23

Students have been busy over the last few months exploring their creativity and learning proper photography techniques. All of this hard work is going to be showcased in a Photography Gala the night of Thursday, May 23.

Families are invited to drop in between 5:30 pm and 7:00pm to view the more than 700 photographs on display and to share in the excitement as you celebrate the achievements of the students.

Volunteers needed:

On the morning of Thursday, May 23 (8:30am - 11:30am)  we are in need of some volunteers to help support Janet, the photographer, with the setup of the Photo Gala. If you are interested and able to support please contact Ms. Bonanno at ljbonanno@cbe.ab.ca

Ready to Paint the Pavement

Thank you so much for all your thoughtful and creative designs! University School whole-heartedly embraced this project and we can not wait to Paint the Pavement together. We have been approved to paint on May 24, 25 and 26. The locations are as follows:

  • May 24, 4 PM to 6 PM, Utah Dr NW in front of University School
  • May 25, 9 AM to noon, Uxbridge Dr at Utah Dr NW
  • May 26, 9 AM to noon, Utah Dr at Urbana Rd NW

We are sorting through designs right now (we received over 150 from University School alone!!!) and will communicate more information in the next week. Until then, please mark your calendars for one (or all!) of these painting days. We can't wait to see this project come to life with your help.

Please note - there will be some temporary road closures to allow for safe painting and to give time for the designs to dry. Friday's closure will be minimal but if your child attends Summit, be aware you may have to park a little further away. All sidewalks and crosswalks will be open during painting.

Building with Empathy

Students in the Gibson/Smith Grade 1/2 community love using their imagination to create, build, and design! With the support of Ms. Bonanno, they used “This is Not a Box” as their inspiration for designing their ideal “Playground”.

She challenged them to build a playground using loose parts. However, they had to build with “empathy” . . .

  • Who are you building for?
  • What would you change from the original design?
  • What is important to you, other students, parents, people?
  • Who would play at your park?
  • Is it safe? How?
  • Can grandparents and pets go there?

New Student Open House a Success

Thank you to everyone who attended the New Student Open House that was held on Friday. It was great seeing so many new faces as well as some familiar ones. Families started in the learning commons with a brief introduction and some sharing of information before heading off on their way to explore University School. Families popped into various classrooms and said hi to teachers while looking at student work and displays that were up in the hallways.

We are welcoming back all 2024-25 Kindergarten Students for a mini-Kindergaren experience on Friday, June 7. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.
