Staying Healthy

Last week I sent an email to families about the concern regarding students arriving late and also those who are frequently absent. A few families asked what the current policies are when students are not feeling well.

The health and well-being of students and staff is incredibly important to us. We understand that there are circumstances that can impact why a student is not at school such as illness, family events, and medical appointments. We trust that families will make decisions that they feel are best for their child(ren) and family. However, it is difficult for teachers to support students and their learning when they are not at school

The CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services with respect to health matters. The suggestions are to stay home when feeling sick; avoid close contact with people who are sick, frequently wash your hands, cover your cough, avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, and clean and disinfect frequently touched areas.

If a student is not feeling well and this illness impacts their ability to learn or for those around them to learn then they should stay home. If a student is at school and we feel their learning is being impacted then we will call for someone to pick them up.

Thank you for your support and understanding around this.

Snow White and the 7 Regions

Students and staff had the opportunity to both participate in and enjoy an incredible presentation by Evergreen Theatre titled “Snow White and the 7 Regions.”  This fun-filled environmental musical adventure is part of Evergreen Theatre's Eco-Tales series in which beloved traditional tales are retold featuring popular music parodies while educating students on current social and environmental issues.

It was great seeing students and staff laughing together while learning topics related to the current curriculum. Some of you might also remember their show last year, the Wicked Witch of the Wetlands.

We would like to thank University School Parent Association and School Council for sponsoring this presentation and enhancing the learning of students at University School.

Spring Concert

We are getting ready for our annual Spring Concert! It is the time when families get to see the work that our students are doing in music class, from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Students have been working hard, learning songs and playing instruments to share with you all!

Date: Thursday, March 14th, in the school gym

Time: We will be doing two concerts on this day:

  • Matinee/dress rehearsal at 1:00pm AND
  • Evening performance at 6:30pm

For the evening, we ask students to arrive at the school at 6:00pm. Doors for the gym open at 6:00pm to families and the concert will begin at 6:30pm. To honour the work that all students have done, please plan to stay for the entire concert, which will end by 7:30pm.

Please plan to attend one of the concerts only - we encourage any families that can attend the afternoon concert to try to, as the evening concert fills the chairs, leaving standing room in the gym and the upstairs galleries to be used as well.

With musical performances, all children are part of the team. Please plan for your child/children to be at both concerts

I am so thrilled that we get to share our work with everyone, live and in person! See you on March 14!

Fun Snack - Kernels Popcorn - March 14

The next fun snack is the super popular Kernels Popcorn. This snack will be handed out on Thursday, March, and the last day to order is Saturday, March 9.

We are continuing the highly successful option in Healthy Hunger for families to donate / buy snacks for friends so that the school can purchase items for those students who are unable to do so themselves. It is wonderful seeing University School community coming together to help each other out.

Please visit Healthy Hunger to purchase the Kernels Popcorn fun snack or to view future snacks and lunches.

School Council & Parent Association Meeting - March 6

The next School Council and Parent Association meeting of the year is this Wednesday,  March 6 @ 6:45 pm. The meeting will be virtual only so please use the link below to access the meeting.

The meetings are a great way to find out more about University School, ask questions, and be a part of something bigger. You can be an active participant in the meeting, just listen to what is being said, or find out how you can get involved in making University School an even more amazing place for your children. We really appreciate the feedback and new ideas that came from families during the January meeting.

It is with the support of University School Families and the community that we can provide such wonderful learning opportunities for students and put on fun events for everyone.

Click here to attend the meeting (Microsoft Teams) on Wednesday, March 6 at 6:45pm

CBE Survey

Grades 5 and 6 students will be participating in an online school perception survey for students called the CBE Student Survey which will run from March 5 - March 13.  Please find the details of the survey implementation below.
About the CBE Student Survey

  • Allows students to voice their feedback on their experiences at school, the school environment and school improvement programs.
  • Based on their feedback, students have the opportunity to be involved in action plans fostering increased student engagement.
  •  The survey should take about 60 to 80 minutes to complete.

The CBE Student Survey is an opportunity for students to:

  •  report on themselves, their own abilities, and their accomplishments; and
  • take pride in what they have achieved.

In alignment with CBE’s Education Plan, the results are used in school and district reports to demonstrate that students are:

  • at the centre of all CBE decisions;
  • able to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies they are acquiring across all academic disciplines; and
  • demonstrating Citizenship, Personal Development and Character in and through learning.
