Student Learning Conferences
This Thursday, March 21 and Friday, March 22 we are inviting you to share in your child’s learning by signing up for Student Learning Conferences
This round of conferences will be student led which means your child must come with you so that they can share, demonstrate, and celebrate their learning with you. You will be booking a 30 minute time slot to explore your child’s learning and the classroom. Each time slot may be shared with up to two other families. Therefore, there may be brief opportunities to check in with your child’s teacher but this is not the time to have specific 1 on 1 conversations. If this is required we ask that you contact your child’s teacher to schedule a time to meet.
Student Learning Conferences for Grades 1- 6 will be held on Thursday, March 21 from 3:30pm to 7:30pm and on Friday, March 22 from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Conferences for Kindergarten Students are on Thursday, March 21 from 8:30 am to 7:30pm and on Friday, March 22 from 8:00 am to 12:00pm.
Beginning tomorrow, Saturday, March 16 you will be able to use your MyCBE PowerSchool account to book a 30 minute conference with your child’s homeroom teacher.
To access My School Conferences and book your conference beginning on November 18 please visit : MyCBE | PowerSchool - Once signed in go to > myCBE Apps > my School Conferences.
If you do not yet have a MyCBE account, please go to the MyCBE page click on Create a MyCBE Account. For online help refer to MyCBE - Creating an Account (includes instructions and a video).
Minecraft Challenge!
Universty School would like to let all students know about an upcoming a CBE-Wide Level Up Calgary Minecraft Challenge!
What is Level Up Calgary?
Level Up Calgary is CBE's system-wide Minecraft design challenge in partnership with Microsoft and The City of Calgary. It features a customized Minecraft world of downtown Calgary with access to city experts, public art, and key landmarks. This authentic learning opportunity offers students a chance to prototype their ideas in Minecraft and share their voice for the future of our city.
What do students need to get started?
A device with Minecraft Education Edition installed (specific instructions will follow) and some imagination and hard work.
My learner is interested…What next?
Students who are interested can speak with Mr. Lang about the challenge and find out what they need to do next.
Students will complete the challenge at home on their own device.
They will be provided with a student/parent guide, tutorials, and instructions on how to log in using their CBE student ID.
We will have a check-in meeting at school to track progress along the way.
Submissions are due April 26.
Please email Mr. Lang by Wednesday, March 20 at jplang@cbe.ab.ca if your learner is interested in participating in this year’s challenge.
Community Through Music
A huge thank you to all of the families, guests, and visitors who came to enjoy University School’s Spring Concert. Music and the arts are a great way of bringing people together as we were fortunate to have former students, community members, a school bus driver, and families and friends share in the performances.
Through the junior and senior, choirs and class ensembles guests were transported to a time when classical music reigned supreme, but with a slight twist. The students shared their knowledge of a few different composers through vocals, percussion, woodwind instruments (recorder), and the use of ribbons.
We hope that this showed you the value that the arts has in public education and what is possible with a few students and lots of hard work!
School Council Update
University School School Council has a few hopes and plans for the upcoming months. We are looking for interested volunteers to help support and implement these ideas. If any of the ideas below resonate with you in any way, please contact us at universityschoolcouncil@gmail.com
1) Family Movie Night. The tentative plan is to host a Family Movie Night one evening in April, date to be decided. If you would be interested in helping plan or run this evening, please reach out to the Council email. We are also looking for donations of snacks/treats for the evening, to cut down on the costs. If you own a company or know of a business that may be able to donate something, please reach out.
2) Instagram (or other Social Media) Account. We are looking for someone who is interested in running a University School Council social media page. The purpose of this account would be to build community and share ideas in a timely manner. If you are interested, please reach out to the email above.
3) "Cultural Connections". Some families suggested that we share more about our cultures with each other. We would like to invite people to send descriptions or stories about their cultural practices to be shared in the weekly message (or hopefully eventually on a social media platform!) For instance, if you celebrate Ramadan, St. Patrick's Day, etc. you could write a short blurb about what that looks like. Anyone interested can contact the email listed above.
Thank you,
University School Parent Association and School Council
