Paint the Pavement
Paint the Pavement - we need your help! The University Heights Community Association in partnership with the City of Calgary, Activate YYC, University School and Westmount Charter is calling for your designs and time to paint the pavement around the crosswalks near our schools.
A few lucky student designs will be selected to go on the pavement near the school!
More information and the templates are available for interested students at the University School office. We can't wait to see your artwork in our community!
Support Staff Appreciation Week
April 23 to 27 is Support Staff Appreciation Week at the Calgary Board of Education. It is important to reocgnize the essential role played by these staff members who are critical in supporting student well-being and learning. Without our Lunch Supervisors, Library Assistants, English as Additional Language Assistants, School Assistants, Educational Assistans, Office Admin, and facilty staff the days would not run as smoothly.
During this week we encourage everyone to recognize the contributions that support staff make each and every day!
School Council Follow up
Thank you to all who attended the meeting last Wednesday. We have seen an increase in community participation and appreciate hearing from everyone. It is important to share ideas and ask questions as we work to make University School an even more incredible place to learn.
We are looking for interested volunteers to help support and implement these ideas as no one has come forward to volunteer yet. If any of the ideas below resonate with you in any way, please contact us at universityschoolcouncil@gmail.com
1) Family Movie Night. The tentative plan is to host a Family Movie Night one evening in June, date to be decided. If you would be interested in helping plan or run this evening, please reach out to the Council email. We are also looking for donations of snacks/treats for the evening, to cut down on the costs. If you own a company or know of a business that may be able to donate something, please reach out.
2) Instagram (or other Social Media) Account. We are looking for someone who is interested in running a University School Council social media page. The purpose of this account would be to build community and share ideas in a timely manner. If you are interested, please reach out to the email above.
3) "Cultural Connections". Some families suggested that we share more about our cultures with each other. We would like to invite people to send descriptions or stories about their cultural practices to be shared in the weekly message (or hopefully eventually on a social media platform!) For instance, if you celebrate Ramadan, St. Patrick's Day, etc. you could write a short blurb about what that looks like. Anyone interested can contact the email listed above.
Thank you,
University School Parent Association and School Council
Sharing the Road Safely
A group of University School students has been working by collecting data to determine ways we can improve student safety to and from school. Over the last two weeks data was collected about how students go to school and home from school as well as doing a traffic analysis around the school. This work is supported by Everactive Schools, the City of Calgary, and the University Heights Community Association.
Students documented many dangerous and questionable behaviours including jaywalking, u-turns, parking on the curb, blocking driveways, and letting out students in the middle of the road. A walk-about will be occurring in the upcoming weeks with community partners such as the City of Calgary and Calgary Police Services to support us in finding ways to make things safer.
As part of this, students in grades 1 to 6 were given a map of the biking and walking paths within the City of Calgary. This is a great website from the City of Calgary explaining the many ways that we can share roads and pathways safely together. https://www.calgary.ca/roads/safety/sharing-with-cyclists-changes.html

Sharing Back | School Planning
Thank you to everyone who participated in our school planning engagement. We know we make better decisions to support student learning when we build understanding and work together.
The feedback we received is compiled at the links below and will be thoughtfully considered in making decisions about school planning.
We did not receive any responses or feedback on the meeting evaluation summary. For this reason, we cannot share the survey results on our website.
We encourage your participation in future engagement initiatives. Your input is important to us and we know we make better decisions to support student learning when we build understanding and work together.
