Hats on for Mental Health
Raise awareness of the importance of mental health in schools! Wear a hat on May 8!
Every year the Canadian Mental Health Association dedicates a week in May to raise the awareness of Mental Health. This year Mental Health Week will run May 6-10, and Hats On! for Mental Health Day will take place on Wednesday, May 8.
Throughout the month of May University School will be engaging in different activities to support student and staff mental health and awareness of the importance of looking after our body and mind. We are fortunate to be part of such an amazing learning community and sometimes we just need to slow down and reflect on how truly lucky we are!
PHAS Choice 2024 Igniting Curiosity, Empowering Futures
The PHAS (Physics and Astronomy) Choice Program from the University of Calgary was a unique opportunity for students to meet physicists, learn about their research, ask questions, and most importantly, have a fun experience in the physics laboratories. The project was open to all female students currently in Grade 6 attending schools in Calgary. Students engaged in hands-on experiments and demos, led by University of Calgary students.
“I thought it was very educative and it really bettered my understanding of physics, and other intricate parts of science.” - Olivia

Calgary Varsity MLA Visit
On Thursday Dr. Luanne Metz came and gave a presentation about her role as an MLA, what us kids can do about it, and more about the government. In the picture she is explaining where the legislative building is and what she does there. She explained that she is part of the Alberta NDP, that is the official opposition party to the UCP. She said that if the government does something she doesn’t like, she can still try to get bills passed or not passed anyway. If there is something one of us kids doesn’t like, there are also ways to speak out even if we can’t vote - like canvassing door to door.
This presentation was important because this was an amazing opportunity to meet the MLA of Calgary Varsity. This presentation was also connected to the Grade 6 social Unit and we are learning the responsibilities of all the three different levels of government. Both Grade 6 classes had an amazing time with Dr. Luanne Metz and some students asked deep questions that made her think and answer more deeply. Dr. Luanne Metz shared her reasons why she wanted to become a politician from a doctor and a researcher. This was an amazing chance to learn about how being an MLAs is important and how being a citizen is also important.
“I thought it was interesting learning about what an MLA does in the legislative assembly in Edmonton,” stated Samaiyra
Viana said, “It was exciting to meet an MLA and learn about the roles of the government.”

2024-25 New Student Open House
We would like to invite all new students for the 2024-25 school year to join us on Friday, May 10 at 1:00pm to learn more about University School and have a chance to look around. This invitation is just for new and incoming families and students who have registered and have been accepted to attend University School for the 2024-25 school year.
We will begin in our Library Learning Commons with a brief introduction and some sharing of information by Ms. Gunn, the Kindergarten teacher, and Mr. Lang and Ms. Bonnano, school administrators. After the short presentation families are welcome to tour the rest of the school and meet some of the teachers who will have their classrooms open for about 30 minutes. The Kindergarten classroom will be open for students and families to explore together as well.
For families that are unable to attend we will have more communication and information coming out in the next few weeks about next year and what to expect.
Also, all Kindergarten students for the 2024-25 school year will receive another special invitation for a "mini-kindergarten" experience that will take place in the morning of Friday, June 7.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact University School.
Fire Drill
On Thursday afternoon we completed one of this school years mandatory fire drills. The students and staff were able to exit the building in a timely manner and we appreciate all students taking the practices seriously.
We encourage all families to create a fire safety plan for their home. More information can be found on the City of Calgary Fire Safety website.
Lost and Found Clean Up
Our lost and found is over flowing and most items have been there for many weeks. We will be packing up all unclaimed items at the end of the week and donating them.
