Thank You for Coming
What an incredible night to come together to enjoy the company of the students, families and staff at University School. We hope everyone met someone new and saw a few of the many things that make University School such a wonderful place to learn and work.
Thursday night was an opportunity to meet your children’s teachers but it did not provide opportunities for in-depth conversations about their learning. If you feel as though you would like to meet with your child’s teacher before the conferences in November, we ask that you email them to arrange a meeting.
We look forward to hosting more family events throughout the year that allow us to come together and celebrate your children and their learning.
Orange Shirt Day – Truth and Reconciliaction
As part of University School’s commitment to reconciliation through education, students and staff participated in Orange Shirt Day & Every Child Matters on Thursday, September 26.
Throughout the week classes engaged in age-appropriate activities to enhance student understanding and reflect on the lang acknowledgement and what it means to them. Please ask your children about what the land means to them.
To learn more about University School’s specific actions towards Truth and Reconciliation, please click here. All CBE schools will be closed on September 30 in recognition of National Truth and Reconciliation Day. We hope that you have an opportunity to spend time reflecting with your family on this day and that your children can share some of the learning they engaged in this week at school. By taking on this important work and working together we can further the commitment to reconciliation through education.
Please visit the CBE’ s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation webpage for more information about community events for your family to participate in.
Terry Fox Run
“No matter the distance. No matter the journey. No matter the odds. No matter what.” - Terry Fox Foundation 2024
University School is proud to be participating in the annual running of the Terry Fox Walk/Run on Friday, October 4, 2023. We will participate in the “Marathon of Hope” as a whole school community. Some classes may run to the Duck Pond, while others may only make it part of the way. Over 9000 schools across Canada will hold a run this year. This is the 44th anniversary of Terry Fox’s run in Canada and over 37 years at University School.
Terry Fox was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer treatment activist. In 1980, he became famous for the Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research, which Fox ran with one prosthetic leg. He is considered one of Canada's greatest heroes and is celebrated internationally every September as people participate in the Terry Fox Run, the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research. Learning communities at University School will be learning about Terry Fox and his story through video clips, books and discussion.
We are collecting donations to support this worthy cause. All donations must be completed online directly to the Terry Fox Foundation. Last year University School raised almost $9000.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
Please help us reach our goal by donating at: https://schools.terryfox.ca/University. Thank you for joining our school in the fight against cancer. #terryfoxchallenge #TerryFoxLivesHere @theterryfoxfoundation
Our Terry Fox Run will take place on the path leading to the Duck Pond. Students and teachers are excited to participate in this event. We will be encouraging all students to dress in University School Spirit Wear and to dress for the weather as we will be running rain or sun.
We are proud to be associated with the Terry Fox Foundation and believe that our involvement will help find a cure for cancer. We are looking forward to coming together as a school to honour the work of this great Canadian. Together we can keep Terry Fox’s dream to find a cure for cancer alive!
Fun Lunch & Fun Snacks - Kernels Popcorn
We are happy to announce that with the support of the Parent Association/School Council we are going to launch Fun Snacks and Fun Lunches for this school year. We will be alternating between fun snacks and fun lunches throughout the year.
The first fun snack is Kernels Popcorn and it will be on Thursday, October 10. Orders must be placed at least 5 days before the delivery date for this fun snack is Saturday, October 5.
Also, we are continuing the highly successful option in Healthy Hunger for families to donate / buy snacks for friends so that the school can purchase items for those students who are unable to do so themselves. This option is only available for the Kernels Popcorn fun snack. It is wonderful seeing University School community coming together to help each other out.
Login/create your Healthy Hunger account at www.Healthyhunger.ca. If this is all new to you please see more detailed information below.
What is Fun Snack / Lunch
This program allows parents to purchase food for their child on specific dates throughout the year. It not only provides fun food for the students, but it also serves as a valuable fundraiser for our school.
How Can My Child Participate?
Fun Snack / Lunch is run on an online system called Healthy Hunger. All orders are posted for University School and require a parent account to participate. You can sign up on the Healthy Hunger website and register your child.
How Do I Register?
Visit www.HealthyHunger.ca and click on Register Your Student. Fill in the required information and select Create My Account. You will then add each child who is participating to your account. Once completed, you will have access to all the snacks or lunches that the school has posted. Online payment is available. Click here for step by step instructions.
What If I Already Have an Account?
If you already have an account with Healthy Hunger, simply log in and enter your child’s new information. **This will have to be updated every year as teachers and grades change.
What if I Have Questions?
For program information, please email University School’s School Council (universityschoolcouncil@gmail.com). For any account issues please contact the Healthy Hunger team through their website.
University School Council’s ‘Fall Ball’ Family Dance
University School will be hosting a Family Dance on Thursday, October 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM. Every child attending needs to come with their own adult supervision, as childcare is not part of the event.
We renamed our Halloween Dance as the ‘Fall Ball’ last year to make it more inclusive. While the dance will look the same as other years, there is no pressure to wear a costume or celebrate Halloween. We will have a rockin’ DJ, a costume contest, food and snacks, and several other fun activities!
Save the date and more information will be coming in the weeks ahead.
If you are able to help, have suggestions or comments, please direct them to School Council at universityschoolcouncil@gmail.com. We are always open to new ideas!
St. Andrew’s Heights Community Cleanup
St. Andrew’s Heights is having a community clean up on Sunday, September 29th. They are looking for volunteers to help them out with their first community cleanup.
As well, it's a great way to finish off any fall cleaning that might be in the works right now. They will be having electronic recycling.
Clean up will be in the parking lot directly east of the St Andrews Heights community hall at 2504 13th Ave NW.
