Wordfest - Grade 6 Field Trip

This past week University School Grade 6 students attended Wordfest’s Youth Program. Below are some thoughts from a few students:

“The field trip to hear David A Robertson was amazing and we were so lucky to see and her him talk about his career as an author and hear about all of his books.”

“It was great to hear David’s career and about his book. It wa also really great to ask him personal questions. At hte end of hte day, we got a bonus and had a draw for who would get a free copy one of his books.”

“We learned that many of his books are inspired by his personal experiences. We found out that hte characters are based off of his family members and friends.”

“I like that we got to meet an indigenous author and I loved how we got to ask him questions.”

“David Robertson mentioned that his inspirations for writing the Misewa series that we are reading included: re-telling of Indigenous stories that were passed on for generations, to send a message that we must be stewards and protectors of the land, and to bring awareness to the fact that over 60% of the children in the foster care system in Canada are Indigenous.”

Fall Ball Family Dance Party - Oct 24

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer but we are still short in many areas with less than half of the spots filled. If you can help we would greatly appreciate it. You can sign up to volunteer here https://signup.com/go/sQuNKht.

Purchase your tickets ahead of time by using the Healthy Hunger website (https://healthyhunger.ca/). The suggested cost of admission is $20. We are again doing a ‘pay-what-you-can’ format to ensure that every family can join. Healthy Hunger allows you to pay in increments of $5. Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the evening of the dance. The Fall Ball is a community event that also functions as a fundraiser for our School Council.

There is food available to order from the Healthy Hunger site (pizza and/or a treat). Food orders are due by Saturday, October 19.  The DJ will be spinning fun tunes. There will be a door prize, best costume prize, and guess-the-candy jar prize.

This is a family dance - all children must be accompanied by adults, no supervision is provided.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Veterans Food Bank Drive

University School is honoured to be accepting food donations for the Veterans Food Bank of Alberta For Remembrance Day 2024. The Veterans Food Bank of Alberta offers a variety of services to assist veterans in need.

Collection boxes will be located outside the main office and we are accepting non-perishable food items, toiletries and pet food. For more information on items to donate, please refer to the Food Bank's "wish list". Thank you for your participation in giving back to our Calgary Veterans.

A big thank you to the Grade 3 students in Room 16 who prepared the boxes and supported this important initiative.

Alien In-Line Residency

What a wonderful start to the Alien In-Line residency. Most classes have now had at least two opportunities to strap on some rollerblades and safety equipment and glide around the gym. The students have been learning how to stay safe while enjoying a sport like this. Students will continue to have opportunities to rollerblade with their classes next week as we finish off the residency.

Fun Lunch - A&W

The first fun lunch of the school year is A&W and they are offering choices such as cheeseburgers, chicken burgers, Beyond Meat burgers, and french fries.

The last day to order the A&W fun lunch is Saturday, October 25. Please go to Healthy Hunger to place your order.

The fun lunch will be distributed on Thursday, October 31

Morning Kindergarten students can wait until 11:10 am to receive their fun lunch if ordered. If they attend Summit they will have their food brought to them there.
