Snapshots of Joy

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend University School’s Photography Gala. It was wonderful having your children share their learning and photographs with you. Students will be able to take their photos home next week once everything is cleaned up and sorted. Also, we understand that a few photographs were missed, or misplaced and I am sorry that this happened as the intent was to have all students hard work on display. Any photographs that were missed will be printed so that students will still be able to take them home.

Below are a few student’s perspectives from the experience:

“My favourite part was the pictures because I like looking at objects from many angles. From the bottom and from the top and from the sides. I like seeing the photos that Ms. Janet already took. I learned that you need to look at things from many angles. The best part was taking pictures from the top of the big curly slide.” - R

“I like taking pictures because I take pictures of all kinds of stuff. I learned that you can lay down and take the picture, or you can move and take the picture. Like when you push the swing it feels like somebody is pushing on the swing. Like taking a picture of someone playing the swing. My favourite picture is the one on the small playground because the small playground has the monkey bars and the slide. I like the monkey bars.” - J

“It was very fun taking pictures with Ms. Janet. Playing with her and taking pictures. I learned that is good to look up, look down, look all around and take it for a spin. Take the camera for a spin. I took photos of my water bottle, plants, and my stuffie. I took photos from up down and took it for a spin.” - L

“My picture looks nice, I like the colours. I like the shape of the building, it is curved. I like how the other pictures are detailed. I like other kids pictures because how they camouflage, the animals. I learned to flip the ipad, the screen and picture gets wider.”- C

Note from Photographer in Residence

It was such a pleasure working with your children at University School this year.   Their curiosity, creativity and hard work truly shone in our Photo Gala this week.  For those of you who made it, I hope you loved seeing the incredible sea of creativity the kids created! And for those who couldn’t make it, I hope you're hearing all about it at home! I encourage your kids to keep using their cameras to connect with themselves, others, and the world around them.

I invite you to visit my Kids Photography Academy website at www.kpaonline.ca.  We’re holding two summer camps at the beginning of July, where kids can dive deep into the technical, compositional, storytelling, and lighting aspects of photography. It’s an amazing way for them to continue their photography adventures!

You can also join the Kids Photography Academy newsletter for a fun dive into how I approach photography with kids and to soak ideas on how to encourage your kids in their photographic explorations.  You’ll also get the latest scoop on our online and in-person programs, workshops, and courses. Exciting projects ahead include summer camps, a photo exchange with kids in Botswana, and an awesome new online photography adventure program for kids that’s in the works. Don't miss out on the fun!

In addition to teaching kids how to take photos, I’m a photographer myself!!!!   Please check out my own photograpy work at www.visualhues.com

.I’m happy to chat with you about family photos, branding photos or headshots.

Keep clickin’!

Paint the Pavement Postponed

It has been a busy couple of weeks and after many hours of looking at beautiful artwork, we have submitted and received approval for the painting design from the City of Calgary. Thank you again for all your efforts!

Now, with your help, we are so excited to Paint the Pavement! Fortunately, we are getting rain. Unfortunately, rain and outdoor painting don't mix so we are going to try again next weekend:

  • May 31, 4 PM to 6 PM, Utah Dr NW in front of University School
  • June 1, 9 AM to noon, Uxbridge Dr at Utah Dr NW
  • June 2, 9 AM to noon, Utah Dr at Urbana Rd NW

If you plan to help paint please email Andrea (andrea@uhcacalgary.org) with the date(s).

Please note - there will be some temporary road closures to allow for safe painting and to give time for the designs to dry. Friday's closure will be minimal but if your child attends Summit, be aware you may have to park a little further away. All sidewalks and crosswalks will be open during painting.
