U of C’s Choice Program
The grade 6 students had the opportunity to attend the U of Calgary's CHOICE program last week whichSchool encourages students to see potential careers in science and education. Some students participated in fun teaching and learning activities at the Werklund school of Education, and others engaged in hands-on physics experiments in the science lab, including sound waves, levers, pulleys and fulcrums, magnetism, using a spectroscope to observe heated gases, and experiments with refracting light and friction.
All students got to peruse the science fair, which showcased, different types of science-related tools and toys. We were also treated to some demonstrations with a Van de Graaff generator and liquid nitrogen, as well as a presentation by Indigenous knowledge keepers. Overall an amazing and fun day of hands-on learning!
Wild Canada Edu-trek
On Monday, the Grade 3 students from Room 16 went on a field trip to the Calgary Zoo. They participated in the Wild Canada Edu-trek program, where they had the chance to see in person the animals they’ve been researching in class. Students made meaningful connections between their classroom learning and real-world observations at the zoo. They also created close-up sketches of distinctive animal features and took time to carefully observe a variety of animals. Throughout the visit, students thoughtfully developed questions and had valuable opportunities to engage with zoo experts.
Red Carpet Event
The Grade 3 students in Room 18 spent the year diving into technology by creating their own stop-motion films—and they had a blast doing it! Even without fancy equipment, they used creativity and teamwork to bring their stories to life. Over four different projects, they learned how to research topics, write scripts, build props, record their voices, and add sound effects.
Their final project was all about the food chain. Each film started with a personal land acknowledgement and then used felt characters to show how living things are all connected in the life cycle.
The students put in tons of effort, learned new skills, and got really good at solving problems in creative ways. To celebrate everything they accomplished, they held a school-wide Celebration of Learning showcasing their movies and even hosted a special Gala for their families. Families dressed up, watched the films, and were blown away by what the students had created!
Animal Inquiry
Grade 1 students visited the Calgary Zoo to deepen their understanding of animals and their habitats as part of their animal inquiry project. Each student has been researching a specific animal and its habitat, and the trip provided an exciting opportunity to see these animals in real life. Students made thoughtful connections between what they observed at the zoo and their research, especially how animals meet their basic needs for food, water, and shelter in diverse environments.
Students had the opportunity to speak with zoo staff to clarify facts and deepen their understanding. They asked thoughtful questions and demonstrated curiosity, such as: “How long can polar bears actually swim for in the Arctic water?"
This experience helped solidify learning in a meaningful way, making abstract ideas concrete and sparking further curiosity about the natural world.
