World Down Syndrome Day

University School is celebrating World Down Syndrome Day on Wednesday, March 19, because students won’t be at school for the actual day on Friday, March 21.

Everyone is invited to wear a pair of mismatched socks this day!

The focus of this day is to educate about what Down Syndrome is as sometimes, people feel nervous about things they don't know much about.  When we learn and welcome differences we teach the meaning of acceptance, inclusion and friendship.

We all have chromosomes in our bodies. A person with Down syndrome has three copies of their 21st chromosome.

When scientists look at chromosomes up close, they look like little pairs of socks.  The pattern on each chromosome looks like stripes, and each one is different.

The video below, My Friend Isabelle, was created as part of the NDSS educational program Everyone Counts: Teaching Acceptance and Inclusion. It is an animated story based on a children's book by Eliza Woloson where we meet Isabelle, who has Down syndrome, and her friend Charlie. They learn that differences make life interesting and friends don't have  to be exactly the same.

Nowruz Mubarak

Nowruz, also known as Persian New Year, means “New Day.” It marks the beginning of spring and is a celebration of life, rebirth, and the triumph of light over darkness. It is a festival that reinforces bonds within families, communities, and even between nations. Today, Nowruz is celebrated by people from various cultural backgrounds around the world, reflecting a universal desire for renewal, peace, and prosperity. Many families celebrate Nowruz by cleaning their homes and having a big feast. Some people also exchange gifts or attend street festivals to ring in the new year.

Happy Holi

Holi, also known as the Festival of Colours, is a traditional Hindu festival and represents different things for different people.  It marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring; it offers people the opportunity to begin anew with a fresh start; and it also honours the triumph of good over evil. Holi is a day of unity, when everyone is to be treated as an equal and this year occured between March 12 and March 14.
