Our Kindergarten students' last day of school is Wednesday, June 25.

Staffing and Class Configuration Updates

As we approach the end of June, University School is proud to have over 350 students actively learning and growing together. Looking ahead to the 2025–26 school year, the CBE projected University School to have an enrolment of approximately 380 students. However, several factors, most notably the imminent closure of the University of Calgary family housing and the decrease in the number of international students coming to study, are impacting the number of students we anticipate for the fall.

Our funding for the 2025–26 school year will be based on the number of students enrolled as of September 30, 2025. As in previous years, we expect to welcome additional students over the summer, which may allow us to make further adjustments at that time. At present, our staffing decisions have been made based on a projected enrolment of 320 students.

At the June School Council and Parent Association meeting, we shared our preliminary plans for next year, including school organization and class composition. Since then, we’ve taken time to reflect on this school year, analyze updated enrolment data, and collaborate as a staff to consider what’s best for student learning. As a result, we are making some organizational adjustments designed to strengthen how we can support students.

For the 2025–26 school year, we anticipate offering both AM and PM Kindergarten classes, an EES class, single-grade classes for Grades 1 through 4, and combined grade classes for Grades 5 and 6 due to enrollment and funding realities.

As we head into the final week of school, we want to share a few staffing updates. Reflecting on the past year, we are once again reminded of how lucky we are to have such an incredible team, staff who support one another and care deeply for your children each and every day.

At this time, we would like to recognize the following staff members who will not be returning to University School in the fall:

  • Ms. Bernardin - Teacher (EES - temp moving to West Dalhousie School)
  • Ms. Cristea - Teacher (Grade 1 - displaced probationary teacher - TBD)
  • Ms. Hill - Teacher (Grade 6 - temp contract ended - TBD)
  • Ms. Whlean - Teacher (Grade 4 - displaced probationary teacher - Buchanan School)
  • Mrs. Brown - Lunch Supervisor (surplused - TBD)
  • Ms. Uma - Educational Assistant (EES - temp contract ended - TBD)
  • Ms. Deborah - Educational Assistant (EES - temp contract ended - TBD)
  • Mr. Jack - Behaviour Support Worker (temp contract ended - TBD)

Staff members who are returning or joining University School:

  • Ms. Kurchak - Teacher
  • Ms. Nouri - Teacher
  • Ms. Funmi - Educational Assistant (EES)
  • TBD - Educational Assistant (15 hours)

Current Class Configurations for 2025-26:

  • EES
  • AM Kindergarten / PM Kindergarten
  • Grade 1 x 3 classes
  • Grade 2 x 2 classes
  • Grade 3 x 2 classes
  • Grade 4 x 2 classes
  • Grade 5/6 x 3 classes

Similar to last year, student class placements will be communicated in late August as there are many moving parts and unknowns at this time.

National Indigenous Peoples Day & Summer Solstice

In acknowledgement of National Indigenous Peoples Day and Summer Solstice many Univeristy School classes spent time outside this past week enjoying the nice weather and taking in all that the land has to offer. By learning on, from, and through the the land students are better grounded and able to understand the reciprocal relationship that we have with Mother Earth.

To further acknowledge and support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, all CBE schools will share their renewed TRC Commitment to Action with their school community in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day.

University School acknowledges and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, and makes the following continued commitment to action for the 2025-2026 school year:

To continue to learn about and through Indigenous knowledges focused on building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect. The Indigenous Education Holistic Life Long Learning Framework will help ground us as we further explore Spirit: To Be, and Body: To Do as part of our commitment.

Sports Day - What an Amazing Day!

Thank you to everyone who helped organize the event, volunteered at stations, or lent a hand to keep things running smoothly. The beautiful weather, smiling faces, and lively (yet organized!) chaos made for a fantastic way to wrap up the year.

It was wonderful to see so many families join us for the picnic lunch and cheer on the always entertaining staff victory in the staff vs Grade 6 tug-of-war! Thank you for your ongoing support and for being such an important part of our vibrant learning community.
