Family Movie Night

Thank you to everyone who came out to share in University School’s first Family Night. There was a great turnout and lots of laughs as students and families enjoyed watching Despicable Me on the big screen in the gym. We look forward to hosting more nights like this in the upcoming school year! A big thank you to University School’s School Council who put on this community building event.

Save the Date - Sports Day and Picnic

On the morning of Monday, June 24 our school will be having its annual sports day. The event will run from approximately 10:00 AM to 11:40 AM, and it will be followed by a family picnic. To ensure that the day is a success, we are looking for parent volunteers to help run various activity stations and support staff members. If you are interested in volunteering and have up-to-date volunteer clearance with our school, please reach out to Mr. Cater at mdcater@cbe.ab.ca or your child’s teacher at your earliest convenience. Thanks for your support!

School Travel Planning Follow-Up Survey - Student Safety

In order to make things safer for students to go to and go home from school, we are continuing to work with Ever Active Schools and the City of Calgary on a School Travel Planning (STP) project. STP is a process that involves school staff, parents and students working with transportation/traffic staff, police and public health to develop a plan to address parental concerns and challenges about school routes and get more students walking and cycling for the school journey.

You can already see some of the impacts including the new schoolyard entrance, street paint, and the sign on the crosswalk.

To help us see if there has been an increase in positive travel behaviours of our school community, we ask that you complete this Follow-Upclick Family Travel survey https://forms.office.com/r/ykHYGMBHrW by Wednesday, June 19 .

To find out more about STP and to answer your questions, clickwho on this link for a School Travel Planning for Parents information page.

Adding Beauty to the Community

It is amazing what can happen when a community comes together to enhance what is already an incredible place. Thank you to all of the students and families who came out last weekend to Paint the Pavement and add some colour to our streets while improving safety and awareness. We would also like to extend our thank you to the University Heights Community Association and in particular Andrea Trainor who organized the event!

Cut or Coins

Inspired by an eight-year-old boy named Colton and his story of courage facing his fight with cancer (Leukemia) and Hudson (one of our grade 4 students, his cousin) who has decided to cut and donate his long hair to support Wigs for Kids Canada.

To support this University School is participating in its first ever year-end community outreach campaign connected to compassion, camaraderie, and community.

The goal of Cut or Coins is to raise funds for The Alberta Children’s Hospital and to also collect donation of hair for Wigs for Kids Canada.

We began with classroom presentations this past week from Cynthia, Colton’s Mom, connected to Colton’s journey with cancer and the Children’s Hospital.

Students have started collecting donations for the Children’s Hospital. If you wish to donate please go to this donation link: https://my.childrenshospital.ab.ca/UES. Donations are invested in the health and well-being of our kids in our community and the advancement of care for children across Alberta and the world: Patient and Family Centred Care, Advancing Child Health, Education, Training and Research.

They have also started recruiting students, parents, teachers, or family members who may be willing to donate their hair to Wigs for Kids Canada.

This will all culminate on June 17 with an assembly celebrating the success of the campaign together as a community, including Hudson, and hopefully, others, having their hair cut to donate.
